La Chaise by Eames

The voluptuous organic form of the Eames La Chaise was an evolution of plywood chairs developed a year earlier in collaboration with architect Eero Saarinen for the "Organic Design in Home Furnishings" competition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. A startling innovation in chair design, its expressive outline was made possible by technological advances in molding fiberglass to create free-form shells for flexible seating. It is a dramatic piece for office reception areas, galleries and museums, and stylish residences. Manufactured by Vitra, one of the preeminent names in European furniture.

The Egg Chair by Eero Saarinen

Form follows function, and nowhere is that more apparent than in a sculpted chair that anticipates the curves of the human body. Arne Jacobsen designed the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, and for its busy lobby, he created the biomorphic Egg (1958). With this chair, Jacobsen embraced new materials that allowed him to shape fluid curves and single-piece molded shells. At a time when others were experimenting with bent tubular steel, Jacobsen focused on the upholstered armchair, believing a solution existed that was still true to modern ideals. Indeed, he met that goal. Set on a rotating base, the Egg Chair allows sitters to swivel toward a conversation area or away from others if privacy is desired. It also tilts back for relaxed lounging. This is the authentic Egg Chair manufactured by Republic of Fritz Hansen. Made in Poland.

The Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen

The expressive sculptural forms of Eero Saarinen’s furniture can also be found in his architecture, from the TWA Terminal at Kennedy Airport to the Gateway Arch in St. Louis to Dulles International Airport. In 1940, the Finnish American and his friend Charles Eames took first prize at the Organic Design in Home Furnishings competition at MoMA. Later that decade, when Florence Knoll challenged Saarinen to create a chair that she could curl up in, she had found the right candidate for the task. The Womb Chair and Ottoman (1946) has an enveloping form that continues to be one of the most iconic and recognized representations of mid-century organic modernism. By applying foam molded over a fiberglass shell, Saarinen created a single-piece form that perfectly facilitates a relaxed sitting posture. Manufactured by Knoll according to the original specifications of the designer. Made in U.S.A.
